Summary

Hercules is one of the most prominent figures in ancient mythology, and one whose influence continues to this day. A look at the traces of Hercules in the art and literature of antiquity reveals who this Hercules was and what he still is today. The starting point for this search is the statue of Hercules on the heights of the Habichtswald in Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. Even a small selection of literary sources reveals a profile that explains the hero's impact. Hercules appears as the prototype of a man who is both victim and perpetrator.
