The single-family home in the country is a significant material and symbolic inheritance of the Fordist decades of the 20th Century: subsidized publically as the response to the social issue, built in huge numbers by an emerging middle class, criticized by experts working in the fields of architecture and urban planning. The contributions to this issue of the Journal of Cultural Studies address historical and contemporary debates about the social ontology of the "single-family home", taking the attribution of values and questions of design, expert discourses and real-life situations of suburban families into account.
