Zusammenfassung
Israel befindet sich in einer doppelten Krise. Im Inneren werden die demokratischen Institutionen durch den Aufstieg eines illiberalen Populismus bedroht; sicherheitspolitisch haben die Anschläge des 7. Oktober 2023 ein Gefühl der existentiellen Unsicherheit ausgelöst. Das Lehrbuch analysiert erstmals umfassend das politische System Israels und die historische Genese der aktuellen Krisenprozesse. Dabei steht das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen autoritären und demokratischen Entwicklungen sowie der institutionelle Wandel der israelischen Demokratie und ihrer Akteure im Zentrum. In den Blick genommen werden insbesondere das Verhältnis von Religion und Staat, die Definition Israels als jüdischer und demokratischer Staat, das Verhältnis von Mehrheit und Minderheit, die Rolle der Sicherheitsdienste und des Militärs sowie die anhaltende Besatzung.
