Zusammenfassung

Es war keineswegs selbstverständlich, dass Europa jemals einen Weg zur Vereinigung finden würde. Natürlich führte der Zweite Weltkrieg zur Selbstzerstörung des alten Systems der internationalen Beziehungen zwischen souveränen Nationalstaaten. Dennoch wurden die Nationalstaaten in einem neuen Umfeld wiederbelebt. Außerdem gab es nun „Supermächte“: die USA und die Sowjetunion, die die Nachkriegswelt prägten. Die Europäische Union hatte Mühe, sich als eigenständigen Akteur zu etablieren. Ihre Geschichte war nie ein geradliniger Weg zu einer ständig wachsenden Mitgliederzahl und zunehmender Entscheidungsgewalt auf EU-Ebene, sondern war geprägt von Höhen und Tiefen, von Enthusiasmus und Dramatik. Diese Geschichte hilft uns zu verstehen, was die Europäische Union heute ist.
