Philosophy

Due to rapid changes and unexpected developments, academic studies of international politics are becoming increasingly complex. In order to examine constantly shifting objects of study, research on international politics must continually revise the theoretical and empirical frameworks and methodology employed. Moreover, both academic research in general and international politics studies in particular should go beyond mere analysis and offer normative guidance to policy makers. The challenges of such a multilevel field of research can only be met by an interdisciplinary approach, in which important insights from both political science and philosophy are applied to studies of topics ranging from armed conflicts, political and religious extremism, migration, identity issues, contested economic structures and regulations, and international law-making to humanitarian intervention and climate change. This book series consists of anthologies of works by philosophers and political scientists and experts from related subjects as well as monographs written by authors with the respective disciplines as a background. All texts submitted for publication in this series undergo a rigorous process of double-blind peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by at least two referees. The editorial process is overseen by the editors and supported by two editorial assistants.

Philosophy thrives on debate, namely justified differences of opinion on assertions, views and theories. The argumentative nature of philosophy also characterises the idea behind this series of publications: it presents critical appraisals of important new studies from the field of philosophy and those related to it by renowned experts in direct discussion with their authors. A short introduction by the author opens each debate, which is then followed by the critics’ essays. Subsequently, the author responds in detail to the arguments put forward in the essays. The series is interdisciplinary and is not dedicated to any particular school of thought; the works published in it are chosen according to their originality and the relevance of their subjects.

The series includes commentaries, critical editions, and monographs on core problems of Greek texts, analyzed with the methods of philology to contribute to the scientific understanding of antiquity: Diotima embodies the relationship between knowledge and poetic depth in the sign of beauty.

Starting since 2019, the Eleatica series gives rise to a second side project, Eleatica Supplementa. The aim of this sub-series is to publish outstanding monographs or essay collections on Eleaticism, so as to offer a further contribute to the scientific literature on the issue. While Eleatica proposes debates among leading specialists in the field, focused on the lectiones magistrales of a well-known scholar, the Supplementa present in-depth studies on specific topics written by scholars that put forward innovative or particularly relevant interpretations. The series is addressed primarily to the community of specialists in Ancient Philosophy, but also to students and more generally the cultured public interested in the origins of Western thought.

This series is intended as a forum for a form of literary studies whose cultural studies expansion has been consolidated since the ›turns‹ in recent decades. The monographs and anthologies it publishes address the ›textures‹ which literature (and culture in general) is composed of: the literal materials and the media and cultural contexts that are inserted and interwoven into texts. These works and analyses are characterised by their openness towards incisive theoretical discussions in literary, media and cultural studies as well as their demands for innovative approaches.

What should we do? What should we not do? What is good conduct? What is the right thing to do? Thanks to our freedom and in our human dignity, such moral and ethical questions arise and challenge us. Ethics as a science that reflects on and examines morality strives to contribute to the clarification of these and similar questions and to offer ethical guidance. The series of publications entitled ‘Ethik – Ethics’ offers a forum for this ethical discourse. It focuses on the ethics of digital transformation and the ethics of so-called ‘artificial intelligence’ or data-based systems, on business, financial and corporate ethics as well as on the ethics of human rights. ‘Ethik – Ethics’ is characterised by the interplay of theologically ethical and philosophically ethical investigations, which can also go beyond these focal points. This series is characterised by excellent studies that identify new and innovative questions, develop approaches to address them and deal with fundamental ethical as well as specialised ethical topics.
