In order to implement research data management successfully atuniversities it is imperative that information literacy be strengthenedappropriately. Students, teaching staff and researchers needto adapt to this new challenge, but so, too, do university servicefacilities. The universities are called upon to offer new coursesand to create new professional careers such as data steward, datalibrarian or data scientist. The support of the university administrationis crucial here. A number of good examples regarding theestablishment both of research data management and also correspondinginformation literacy are already to be found in Germanuniversities. Coordinated action is also called for here to ensurethat existing bottom-up initiatives can develop into nationallyand internationally harmonised research data management. Thisis primarily the responsibility of the political institutions. It shouldbe actively involved in the national coordination of research datamanagement but also make the necessary funding available.
