Media structures—understood as organizations, institutions, and systems—not only shape the behavior of actors but are also maintained or transformed by those actors’ behavior. This theoretical premise positions media structure research as a central field within communication studies. Especially in times of radical media and social change, often described with terms such as digitalization, deregulation, and polarization, media structure research offers vital insights into the ongoing transformation of the media and the public sphere within their political, economic, and technological contexts. This analysis can be seen as a necessary foundation for developing strategies to address current challenges in both media production and use, supporting the reinforcement of media structures that are essential to democracy. Based on seven articles compiled in this special issue of M&K, each addressing different facets of the broad field of media structure research, two key aspects are highlighted: (1) the aim of understanding the dynamic interplay between structure and agency reflected in the interactions among macro, meso, and micro levels. including their impact on society as a whole; and (2) the potential of this foundational, reflective knowledge to help define the role of communication science within society, as well as to inform media policy and regulatory frameworks.
