The Political and Religious Landscape of Greece

Christian Right in Europe can be better understood through the spatial division of Eastern vs Western Europe. The different historical roots of state creation in the continent's western part were strengthened by Protestantism and Catholicism, resulting in the contemporary West European democracies. Nevertheless, West European democracies have been thoroughly examined due to their long democratic tradition. Eastern Europe follows a similar trend, despite its delayed democratic transition. The existence of Christian Orthodox as the religious majority strengthens such research in a different theoretical framework from Western Europe's. However, there is a lack of researches in Southeastern Europe, and especially in the Greek case. The current article will present the relationship between the Greek Orthodox Church and the far-right during the last two decades, acknowledging such a gap in the literature. Therefore, we will clarify how the field is shaped when the discussion is directed to a Christian right party and what such an absence could mean for the Greek political scene and the Christian right in the region.
