Wedding photography today is characterized by a highly conventionalized visual language. It is often difficult to tell from the pictures whether the ceremony was religious or civil. If the difference levels off, the question arises as to which norms and values photos of weddings convey. This raises the image-analytical question of how the levels of representation of civil and religious spheres converge. On the basis of different pictorial motifs of 27 couples, the photographic staging of the couple and the wedding party is examined hermeneutically and in terms of media ethics. The analysis shows how civil and religious spaces and rites mix in their representational norms in wedding photography.
