Access to justice is widely recognised as a key factor in inclusive development, particularly for marginalised populations such as young people. The objective of this paper is to empirically examine the effect of the legal and institutional framework on youth unemployment in Burkina Faso. Using Vector Error Correction Models (VECM) on annual data from 1991 to 2024, we find that improvements in the rule of law, stronger control of corruption, and government effectiveness are associated with a decline in youth unemployment, with a more pronounced effect on young women. Furthermore, our results show that increased economic growth and foreign direct investment (FDI) lead to a decline in youth unemployment. The findings therefore suggest that, in order to reduce youth unemployment in Burkina Faso, the authorities should improve the rule of law and strengthen corruption control. Similarly, they must work to make their actions more effective in the labour market. They could create an institutional environment that promotes the attractiveness of FDI. In addition, they should put in place labour legislation that recognises and protects young people, particularly women, including those who are self-employed, through specific measures in order to achieve a more inclusive society.
