This contribution draws on a genealogical perspective to study the two Trump administrations’ policies relating to education. It traces post-war conservative traditions of anti-intellectualism and their interconnections with constructions of race. This approach illuminates how deeply some of the patterns of rationalization and contestation that we presently observe are rooted in the conservative movement and how they can be rearticulated, radicalized and recombined to legitimize the government’s ongoing anti-modern and authoritarian political project.
