After the commotion of a legal scandal, the Austrian Minister of Justice proposed in March 2016 to expand the training of judges with a mandatory teaching unit in judicial history. The author illustrates the discussion process and shows the structure of the Austrian education program for judges. He discusses the need for a historical perspective. Afterwards, he describes the development and basic concept of the program with reference to a case study curriculum “Justizgeschichte 2015/2016”. Comprised of two modules, the program addresses the judicial history of the 19th and 20th centuries with a focus on the period of National Socialism. With respect to the future, the development opportunities of the curriculum and a proposal to expand them thematically will be discussed. At this point, a look beyond national borders could question the role of gender and law and be more responsive to changes relating to the self-image of judges.
