Christian Mobilization in Portugal in the 21^st Century

In Democratic Portugal, the mobilisation of the Christian right increased progressively from the 1990s onwards, as a result of the achievements of the progressive agenda on key issues such as the decriminalisation of abortion, same-sex marriage and public policies in relation to Catholic public schools. From a social point of view, the mobilisation led to the creation of organisations such as the pro-life movement and to collaboration between Catholic, Protestant and even Muslim religious communities. From a political point of view, the mobilisation created organic relations between the Christian movement and parliamentary political parties. The recent electoral success of radical right-wing populism has taken advantage of this alliance between movements and parties, albeit in a somewhat ambivalent relationship between them.
