In this article, Dosch and Blätgen address the question of what a possible future development of land consumption in Germany might look like, based on the trends in the land requirements solely of the current population, and a strong population growth of six million people by 2045. The results, which are also analysed in terms of settlement structure, are compared with the land policy goals of “Under 30 hectares in 2030” and “A land recycling economy in 2050”.
