For reliable risk assessment of airborne biological agents, it is essential to optimize the entire bioaerosol analytics process from collection to analysis. In this study, quartz fiber and polyethylene sulfone (PES) filters were compared with respect to their usability for DNA analyses of bioaerosol samples. No differences could be found for both materials with regard to extracted DNA amount. However, PES filters allowed the extraction of higher molecular weight DNA compared to quartz fiber filters. This is of importance within the scope of occupational safety and health, to integrate DNA sequencing technology into future risk assessments. Moreover, our results show that shorter sampling times may lead to relative higher extracted DNA concentrations.
