Medienberichterstattung prägt die öffentliche Wahrnehmung von sozialen Bewegungen maßgeblich. Spektakuläre Protestaktionen erfüllen zwar die medialen Selektionskriterien, bergen aber auch die Gefahr, dass sie die öffentliche Wahrnehmung verzerren. Diese Studie untersucht die deutsche Klimabewegung anhand zweier Gruppen: Fridays for Future und Letzte Generation, wobei letztere oft für ihre disruptiven Protesttaktiken kritisiert wird. Aufbauend auf dem Konzept der Mediatisierung, dem Protest Paradigm und der Agenda-Setting-Theorie analysieren wir den medienvermittelten Effekt verschiedener Proteststrategien auf Leserkommentare. Unsere quantitative Inhaltsanalyse umfasst 100 Online-Nachrichtenartikel und 1.910 Leserkommentare von drei großen deutschen Nachrichtenseiten (2019–2023). Artikel über die Letzte Generation konzentrieren sich dabei mehr auf deren Protestaktionen und führen in den Leserkommentaren seltener zu Diskussionen über das Klimathema. Sie sind auch negativer als Artikel, die Fridays for Future betreffen. Dagegen spiegeln sich journalistische Bewertungen nicht direkt in den dazugehörigen Leserkommentaren wider. Diese Ergebnisse legen nahe, dass nicht-normative und disruptive Proteststrategien dem Diskurs über den Klimawandel schaden könnten. Unsere Ergebnisse sind relevant für soziale Bewegungen und Interessengruppen, die versuchen, das Bewusstsein für gesellschaftlich relevante Themen wie Klimaschutz und Klimawandel zu schärfen. Darüber hinaus trägt diese Studie zum Verständnis der Dynamik zwischen sozialen Bewegungen, den Medien und der Öffentlichkeit innerhalb des politischen Kommunikationssystems bei.
