note = {Once ubiquitous, the fact that Muslim merchants were overshadowed by
their non-Muslim counterparts in the later Ottoman Empire helped
engender the misconception of an antagonism between Islam and
enterprise. Based on a document in the Austrian State Archives, my
paper presents evidence of a small ‘colony’ of Ottoman Muslim
merchants in mid-eighteenth-century Vienna. It provides insights into
the workings of a community, the motives of those involved, and the
dynamics of entrepreneurship and trans-regional networking.},
